Jackie Joyner-Kersee’s Winning in Life Program

Beginning the week of January 9th and running until March 5th , the JJK Winning in Life Program will occur weekly on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 – 5:30 pm
Location: Scott 6th grade center

(800 Olive St, Coatesville, PA 19320).

*Participants must attend all 9 sessions

JJK’s Winning in Life program empowers children to succeed through self-confidence, character development, and leadership development. Inspired by her own experiences, this program provides the discipline and flexibility to ensure every child receives optimal benefits from participation — in person, in school, after school, or during sports.

Incredible Years is a 12-week program for Coatesville parents with at least one child between the ages of 6-12. CYI provides dinner and free childcare during the group meeting.

Each session focuses on one life skill that served as a key tool in Jackie Joyner-Kersee’s journey. Through a combination of teambuilding initiatives, physical activity and personal reflection, the Winning in Life curriculum is designed to support youth in becoming resilient and successful people while they participate in high-quality physical activities.

About the Program

The following life skills are both the foundation for the Winning in Life curriculum and the skills Ms. Joyner-Kersee applied to attain her athletic goals: Confidence, Courage, Risk-Taking, Critical Thinking, Determination & Grit, Desire, Dedication, Commitment & Hard Work, Goals, Passion, Self-Respect, Service, Values and Wellness.

Each week a new life skill will be introduced. All sessions will follow a similar format:

  • Team Building: Each session will begin with a team building activity to help strengthen relationships and foster connection between youth participants.

  • Pre-Game Activity: The Pre-Game activity is designed to help build awareness of that week’s life skill through a fun, interactive group activity.

  • Physical Activity: Youth will participate in a high energy game which will be purposely designed to support each life skill through physical activity.

  • Huddle Up: Following each game, youth will “Huddle Up” for group discussions where youth can share feedback and discuss connections between the weekly life skill and the group activity.

  • Finish Line Thoughts: Each session will close with a group reflection where youth can share their thoughts and engage in open, honest dialog with one another.

The JJK Winning in Life Program is proudly brought to CYI and the Coatesville community through a partnership with the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation and American Water (https://www.amwater.com/paaw/about-us/environmental-stewardship).
